‘3am’- Mary Hennessy (2023)

Director - Callum Roberts

Synopsis

We wanted to make a video that reflected the meaning behind the song, living in the past and getting lost in nostalgia of your teenage years.

The past and present are separated by aspect ratio, a nod to the camcorder home videos of early childhood to spark an immediate feeling of the past and memory. Mary’s character is exploring her memories from an outside perspective, never able to interact with the past - we wanted to show this disconnection in a striking way and settled on the use of 2D animation to further show this distance from the past. The cutout effect was created frame by frame to give a choppy and dreamy feel to the movements.

Drawing ideas from our own teenage years, we wanted the memory to sit right at the end of that period of a young persons life - the end of sixth-form - for most, the real beginning of the adult world and the end of adventurous and care-free teen-hood. The natural setting of the video serves to show this youthful freedom too, with the treehouse serving almost as a safe-haven away from responsibilities.
